- Why an income tax versus a property tax? An income tax removes the disproportional burden that a property tax places on farmers and other real property owners of sizeable acreage. It also lessens the burden on senior citizens, many of whom are on a fixed income. It spreads the tax amongst all who live in the district and earn an income, rather than just those who own real property
- What earned income is taxed? Wages, which would most commonly include, w-2 income, self employment income, and partnership income for which self employment income tax is paid. PLEASE NOTE: An earned income tax is different that a traditional income tax which is what Northwestern Schools (and others) have! To Learn more CLICK HERE!
- What is not taxed? Social Security, pension income, interest, dividends, capital gains, IRA distributions, rental income, and royalty income.
- What are “operating expenditures”? Operating expenditures are expenses paid for through the school district’s general fund. These include the following: transportation costs, utilities, consumable materials and supplies, salaries and benefits for all staff, athletics, mandated educational expenses and personnel.
- Is this levy for new buildings or renovation? No, this levy is not for construction or renovation. Construction and renovation costs come from Permanent Improvement funds or Bond issues. Permanent Improvement and Bond issue funds cannot be used for general operating expenditures.
- Why is Triway asking for money now ? We have lost revenue from the state due to statewide budget cuts to education.
